Joris is Dutch and an engineer onboard the Rainbow Warrior.

“I used to work on merchant navy ships, and at power plants. But that was too boring, and I always was curious how it would be to work for Greenpeace, so I applied for the job and now I am here.”

He prefers life on board Greenpeace ships. “The social life is much better than on merchant navy ships.”

Joris says the climate campaign is very important, particularly given the urgency of the issue. “I hope it makes people think and act.”

    hi Joris,

What a shame you are not coming to Wellington with the Rainbow Warrior. Good to hear this ship is in your capable hands cause you know what they say “It ain’t much if it ain’t Dutch”. I re-joined Greenpeace last year to stop Whaling in the Pacific by Japan for scientific reasons [ yeah right!!!] Hope you like it on this side of the world I immigrated here in 1974 and have 6 children [kiwis] and 4 grand children. Keep up the good work and look after yourself I will pray for you and the boat. Kind regards Maria van der Meel

Maria - we are coming to Wellington! We will be holding public open days at Queens Wharf on April 5, 6, 12 and 13, so feel free to come down to the ship and have a tour. But you may or may not catch Joris; he likes to hide down in the engine room. - Kathy.
