Hi Bob - I suppose you can interpret in different ways but the way I do (and I think Sallie has) is that there are lots of things people can do that are just as important as the more confrontational actions that Greenpeace is known for. I don’t think we’re suggesting that anyone should stay at home on the couch.

The ad promotes becoming involved with Greenpeace by subscribing to our cyber-activist network not giving any kind of financial support (although that is always appreciated too!).

It is all very well saying people are just sitting on a sofa at home, but for some of us we have no other choice, I and many others are disabled and live on a disability benefit which is no mean feat at times. I would love to be out there helping and was in my youth. I would love to send money and will if I win lotto. However these things are not possible so all I am left with is writing protest letters to various governments and groups in the hope that things might change, I also re-cycle, re-duce and re-use and in my heart I cheer Greenpeace on, that is all I can do. My belief is .. if we all do a little bit, it will make a whole.

I think the message “you don’t have to join us” is very inappropriate at a time when we DO need to be getting together and taking collective action against the powers that are leading us to climate disaster.

Paying someone else to go puke on a ship so you can stay home on the sofa is all well and good, but it’s not gonna get the job done.
