A memo to Obama

I watched the US elections last night with some disbelief. Who would have thought? Even when the polls indicated Obama had it – I couldn’t quite bring myself to believe that this young black man was going to be the next US President. But he is. And this morning when I woke up the world felt slightly different. Hope tinged with trepidation? It’s hard to express but I think Brian over at Greenpeace International does it well in his blog post this morning so I’ll share it here …

Thank you, Barack Obama, for giving all of us new hope for a changed America.

We’re non-partisan here at Greenpeace. We don’t have any permanent allies or enemies. We support policies, not politicians. We endorse deeds, not words. So even while a lot of us (in our personal capacity as human beings and not Greenpeace employees) are jumping up and down this morning with glee, we want to take a moment to remind you of the promises you made in your election campaign.

It’s delivering on these promises, or bettering them, that will be the true mark of your leadership. As you yourself said

This victory alone is not the change we seek – it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.

When the oil company sharks and the coal industry crooks and the nuclear energy shisters begin to gather at your door, please remember what you promised us in this election. Please remember the reasons you gave us to hope:

You’ve promised us 80 percent reductions in global warming pollution by 2050.
(Obama-Biden New Energy for America Plan)

You promised to use executive action to regulate global warming pollution, if necessary. (Bloomberg News, October 16)

You promised to re-engage with the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC)—the main international forum dedicated to addressing the climate problem.” (Obama-Biden New Energy for American
plan)

You committed to attend or send a personal representative to the next UN climate talks in Poland this December. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_TD4OL-15U)

You committed to helping create five million new green jobs by investing $150 billion in clean energy over the next ten years, requiring that we get 10 percent of our electricity from clean sources by 2012, and putting at least a million ultra-efficient plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road. (Obama-Biden New Energy for America Plan)

Don’t betray the hope.
Don’t sell out the future.
Don’t break our hearts.
They’re brimming.

greetings from Whangarei , absolute codswallop. watch this space with Mr president elect, wants to close all coal mines in the US putting about million people on the scrap heap, this for starters..what will follow? (watch this space and come back in 12 months to see what has happened)….have you heard it the ‘insiders’ who control what the president is allowed to say or do! take a look back in American history

  2. Trevor Collins, 6. November 2008, 11:31

ps he has to bail out the US motor car industry or else he will have another mutiny on his hands, read all about it, or has anyone at your organisation been following the latest? please keep upto date what is happening in the real world! thank you again…

    Hi To everyone, and anyone,
I think Obama is the best thing in History, to be President.
We all hope he does not get killed, for the sake of all our Future.
He will bring America justice, which will help other Countries.
The World Hopefully will be a heathly place for future Generations.

Yes there is a middle Goverment which dectates.
We either go forward and live, or we put up with the shit.
The standard presidents in time has helped, but people do not come first.
This time its us people that make the World, that we service.

There should not be any Rasicm involved,
as we all are one people involved and connected .
We should take the Opportunity now.
And so we can all be greatful.

And that the new president, takes us people serious, plus our earth,
we need climate action working for the future of the EARTH.

    Bye

It frightens the crap out of me when I hear Greenpeace and being so bloody naieve as to get swept way in this ‘Obama will fix it all hype’. This sugar coated crap is still crap regardless of the colour of its spokesperson.

    Where is your class awareness?
Where has your sense of perspective gone?
What happened to the people in your organisation with the ability to see through the spin?

How dare you be so congratulatory of someone who has been placed in the presidential role by the same people you fight against with ALL of your campaigns.

    :( very disappointing

The Dirty Secret Behind the Candidates’ “Clean Energy” Proposals

Many of the promises the candidates make on the stump would have trouble passing muster with the WTO — that’s the whole point of “free trade” deals.

With Americans hungry for new approaches to the economy, health care, energy policy and a host of other issues, the “free trade” deals advanced by both Democrats and Republicans over the past 30 years may very well come back to haunt them.

Steve: I didn’t say I that I thought Obama will fix everything – he’s obviously ot super human. But he has promised some good changes that offer hope that the US will be a better global citizen. Time will tell, and Barak Obama will be judged on his deeds rather than his promises, but I for one am hopeful.

  8. Trevor Collins, 10. November 2008, 13:38

your international person at Greenpeace said we are non-partisan? this must be the first big joke of this new week…he also went on to mention global warming….anyone in this greenpeace organisation can point me to the data which tells us that the planet is warming? looking forward to your reponse! thank you… ps what about these new greenies in the House, what use will they be? None!! will be getting all those free perks from our hard earned taxes.. how many seats did they get with only 6.4%…what a farce this MMP system .

  9. Trevor Collins, 10. November 2008, 13:44

Steve you are quite right about this Mr Obama..read this space in 12 months time, he is only the front man, perhaps you have never heard of the ‘insiders’ who have always been in the White House since day one, ,they are the ones who will tell me what to ‘do’ and ’say’….remember this in the days to come…

  10. Trevor Collins, 10. November 2008, 13:58

be prepared? this was the old scout motto I believe…according to some person in the UK, he has worked out on his computer, that we have 97 months, 2851, 68424 hours (does not say how many seconds!) to save the planet, when the clocks stops ticking, we will have reached the ‘tipping point of no return’) this was at this morning (www.onehundredmonths.org) please paste and set your clocks..whatever next?

Trevor Collins here’s an article about proof of global warming …

Greetings Pete…just checking your bbb.co.uk ( I think we have moved on since 28th April 2005!) the latest data from the 4 world climate research centres (which include Hadley and NASA) tell us that the world has been ”cooling’ since 1995 or could it be 1998)….I trust you have caught up with the so called ‘disappearing ice’ in the Arctic? well worth a read, but not something you find on any greenie web site, especially the BBC….Pete were you around in 1952?, the New York Times noted that the ‘trump card’ of global warming” has been the” melting glaciers” would I go on? thank you … ps I trust you took time out to check out 100 months!!

So they don’t teach a lot of science or apparently the ability to filter rubbish media in Whangarei schools then Mr Collins? It truly saddens me that your scope is so limited to not be able to see what is really happening in the world around you. Having just finished an Otago BSc (thats science by the way Trevor) I can assure you that the vast majority of legitimate scientists (not the ones in the pocket of big oil, et al) agree that climate change is happening and it has been vastly accelerated by human actions. Climate change will alter weather patterns in different ways in different areas. Glaciers in some regions will advance due to increased precipitation, for example the Fox Glacier, while others are in rapid retreat, such as the Tasman glacier. They are on opposite sides of the Southern Alps by the way Trevor, I’m assuming your geography is not strong either. Not long ago we saw chunks of what I’ve been told was the west Antarctic Ice sheet float past (the ODT flew a sheep out to one, very cute), so you might want to start looking a little closer to home for evidence for climate change. I do hope your house is close to sea level.
P.S. Go Obama! Many of his backers and supposed ‘insiders’ actually give a rats about people before profits, and I wish him and his team luck in the shit fight they are in for post-’Bush’. Cynics and haters only slow us all down.

Having just completed an Otago BSc (thats science by the way Trevor) I can assure you that the vast majority of legitimate scientists (not those in the pockets of Big Oil, et al) agree that the climate is warming and that these changes have been greatly accelerated by human activities, specifically the burning of fossil fuels. Trevor it sounds like you have been sucked in by the PR. Honestly it is like arguing with somone who still believes that the earth is flat. I don´t think Greenpeace should publish your comments – if you want to air your fringe opinions you should do it on your own weblog.

The satellite measurement you´re referring to is a complex measurement of the earth? temperature and results are ambiguous. But even so it has been many years since the satellite analysis showed cooling – unsurprisingly in fact show a steady warming …
    check out the graph :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_temperature_measurements

As for the Arctic – they´re virtually sailing boats across the North Pole mate!

I´m not sure what you´re on about with the glaciers … maybe it´s the CIA?

    Dear Trevor,
you do make some good points about Mr Obama, hes just another U.S. “president”, I dont think the U.S. has effectively actually had a president with any sort of independent decision making powers since Reagan, but you’re completely wrong about Global Warming.

Heres a good piece on where the denialist industry really came from. Its a bit long but it does explain all about the “organized campaigns designed to create public doubt and confusion about science.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T4UF_Rmlio

The U.S. Industry driven Climate Denialist movement has been funded and driven entirely by American Think Tanks and has been the source of all that stuff your reading.

As for your claims about NASA, I think James Hansen [of NASA] would have a thing or ten to say about that… http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/23/nasa-scientists-global-wa_n_108789.html

and RE: “the world has been ”cooling’ since 1995 or could it be 1998)”
No it hasn’t and heres the proof… according to your very own source… the Hadley centre http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/hadleycentre/news/warming_goes_on.html

Also, if you want to see the links between Exxon Mobil and the current generation of skeptics you can see em here http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/campaigns/global-warming-and-energy/exxon-secrets theres also a section on the New Zealand Climate Science coalition and where their links to the U.S. think tanks.

And heres a brand new from Peter Stott, again of the Hadley Centre proving that Global warming is indeed human induced…

    http://www.nature.com/ngeo/journal/v1/n11/abs/ngeo338.html

    Quote:
“We have detected the human fingerprint in both the Arctic and Antarctic region[s],” says Peter Stott, a climate modeler at the U.K. Met (meteorological) Office’s Hadley Center, and co-author of the study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Of a similar sentiment Alice Walker writes :

    Dear Brother Obama,

You have no idea, really, of how profound this moment is for us. Us being the black people of the Southern United States. You think you know, because you are thoughtful, and you have studied our history. But seeing you deliver the torch so many others before you carried, year after year, decade after decade, century after century, only to be struck down before igniting the flame of justice and of law, is almost more than the heart can bear. And yet, this observation is not intended to burden you, for you are of a different time, and, indeed, because of all the relay runners before you, North America is a different place. It is really only to say: Well done. We knew, through all the generations, that you were with us, in us, the best of the spirit of Africa and of the Americas. Knowing this, that you would actually appear, someday, was part of our strength. Seeing you take your rightful place, based solely on your wisdom, stamina and character, is a balm for the weary warriors of hope, previously only sung about.

I would advise you to remember that you did not create the disaster that the world is experiencing, and you alone are not responsible for bringing the world back to balance. A primary responsibility that you do have, however, is to cultivate happiness in your own life. To make a schedule that permits sufficient time of rest and play with your gorgeous wife and lovely daughters. And so on. One gathers that your family is large. We are used to seeing men in the White House soon become juiceless and as white-haired as the building; we notice their wives and children looking strained and stressed. They soon have smiles so lacking in joy that they remind us of scissors. This is no way to lead. Nor does your family deserve this fate. One way of thinking about all this is: It is so bad now that there is no excuse not to relax. From your happy, relaxed state, you can model real success, which is all that so many people in the world really want. They may buy endless cars and houses and furs and gobble up all the attention and space they can manage, or barely manage, but this is because it is not yet clear to them that success is truly an inside job. That it is within the reach of almost everyone.

I would further advise you not to take on other people’s enemies. Most damage that others do to us is out of fear, humiliation and pain. Those feelings occur in all of us, not just in those of us who profess a certain religious or racial devotion. We must learn actually not to have enemies, but only confused adversaries who are ourselves in disguise. It is understood by all that you are commander in chief of the United States and are sworn to protect our beloved country; this we understand, completely. However, as my mother used to say, quoting a Bible with which I often fought, “hate the sin, but love the sinner.” There must be no more crushing of whole communities, no more torture, no more dehumanizing as a means of ruling a people’s spirit. This has already happened to people of color, poor people, women, children. We see where this leads, where it has led.

A good model of how to “work with the enemy” internally is presented by the Dalai Lama, in his endless caretaking of his soul as he confronts the Chinese government that invaded Tibet. Because, finally, it is the soul that must be preserved, if one is to remain a credible leader. All else might be lost; but when the soul dies, the connection to earth, to peoples, to animals, to rivers, to mountain ranges, purple and majestic, also dies. And your smile, with which we watch you do gracious battle with unjust characterizations, distortions and lies, is that expression of healthy self-worth, spirit and soul, that, kept happy and free and relaxed, can find an answering smile in all of us, lighting our way, and brightening the world.

We are the ones we have been waiting for.

    In Peace and Joy,
    Alice Walker

Gary greetings from Whangarei..interesting your mention of certain web sites to check….have done so will do so!! come back later….you still believe in computer modelling for the ‘climate/weather’?? few items came across the screen just this morning….our friend Alfred Gore ‘an inconvenientblog’ well worth a look he is telling us he (he) invented the internet and global warming! pretty good guy! tipping point? Phillipines president advisor ,could be in 42 years (2050?), the UN in 1989 told the world we could reduce global warming by 2000, Alfred himself said recently we have about 10 years (could be 2018?)…and what about the report to believed…arctic sea ice still climbing and climbing….read all about on http://www.skepticsglobalwarming.com... and what about the bloke at http://www.onehundredmonths.org. he seems to have it off to a fine art…I wonder if we will all still be on the planet?

  19. Trevor Collins, 11. November 2008, 15:42

Pete thanks for the reply…please do not allow them to take me off the blog, please I could not stand for that!
PR what is this stuff or who is this person? please let me know before I comment….ps greenies would prefer all of us ‘flat earth’ people to be banned from the media and airwaves! I wonder why? Peter you have got it in for us, have you seen the latest from the greenie people recently?

  20. Gary, 11. November 2008, 16:37

    Trev,
One; if you read the links I posted you would learn that you dont need computer modeling to prove that Global Warming is man made.

Two; that Gore blog is a fake website, you have been fooled my friend.

Three; the middle section of your post is just incoherent rambling so Im not really sure what to say about that. You’re clearly a very frustrated denialist-troll.

Four: “arctic sea ice still climbing and climbing” – No its not Trevor. Not according to real scientists. Shipping lanes have been opened up for Gods sake! You’re deluded man!

Please go back and actually read what I sent you, everything will be come clear if you just allow yourself to let go of this fantasy.

    -Gary

  21. Trevor Collins, 12. November 2008, 13:19

Gary greetings from a cool Whangarei (no warming in this part of the world!)do please me what shipping lanes are open in the Arctic? you will then have me and the rest of us on your side! I am waiting thank you

  22. Gary, 12. November 2008, 14:39

They’re opening as we speak Trev,
But if you’re a REAL skeptic, Im sure you’ll go get yourself your boat operators licence so you can go check for yourself, rather than taking believing us “greenies”…. or NASA.

You can get your Boat Licence here… http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/licences_certification/boat_operator/apply_boat_op.asp

and heres 5 stories about the opening of shipping lanes in the Arctic.

“A remarkable shipping shortcut is opening up between Europe and Asia, because of the changing global climate. The year-round ice in the Arctic has dramatically diminished, meaning that the Arctic Ocean is now open for ship traffic for at least part of the year. The result is a reduction in the journey between Asia and Europe from 11,500 miles to 6,000 miles — almost half the distance – and a alarming proof that the climate is changing fast. ”

Gary, Greetings from the loan sailor in
whangarei….one could ask what planet are we talking about? all is not lost, not quite as we speak but as at 8th November ‘arctic ice extent now likely highest level since 2002, this being 44 days before the start of the Northern Hemisphere winter and 5 months before it will peak’ please check it out http://www.icecap.is/index.php…I am throwing the cat out, to put ther kettle on..climate change is happening for each and everyone of us every day, we could not do with out it, our little veg garden is thriving on its intake of CO2, greener each day, the spuds will be ready for our Christmas dinner! did you get the Wednesday email from http://www.CO2Science.org….what a wonderful team this family is who produce this web site…please check it out, some interesting items for todays issue.

  25. Trevor Collins, 12. November 2008, 20:55

Gary…top cat again, sorry I put you on the wrong path about the goreclanger, I was caught out like you….what I did intend was to ask you to check him out on http://www.gorelied/blogspot.com…..what wonderful reading. is this person the real deal, because I did email him some months back, and knowing how busy a person he is jetting around the world (asking fee about 300 thousand NZ dollars to listen to his speech, but no press allowed) with his carbon miles paid for by his own company). my ? to Alfred ‘why did he make so many mistakes in his now famous film, and why did he tell the media the IPPC report was made up by 2500 scientists? still waiting! anyone on this blog please tell me how many NZ scientists were involved with our effort to this report? ps I have asked our local NIWA people and David Parker, who do not know or will not tell me. (privacy act!)

  26. Trevor Collins, 12. November 2008, 21:04

Gary I do not think the shipping lanes are open this time of the year? North West Passage? good question…who was that greenie scientist from the States who told us the passage would be open for the first in history? I have a picture in my archives the Herald published sometime back, will email the details…the question I asked at the time ,what school did this bloke go to and did he take part in a history or geography class. can you come up with the answer?….thank you

  27. gary, 13. November 2008, 0:04

    Ahoy Trevor,
With all these cats, kettles and geography classes it seems you’re straying into uncharted waters trevo. You still haven’t read what I sent you the first time, have you? and since I’m not going to keep going over and over the same stuff, I’ll just leave you with this final piece of advise; Its all about your sources trev, thats the problem…

theres a great website called ‘Sourcewatch’. You can look up the names of organisations and people to check whether they’ve been funded by someone, or been involved in something that would compromise their authority or objectivity on a particular subject etc. And as you know, for the climate sceptics, theres exxonsecrets.

Heres some information about the “wonderful team this family is who produce this web site” CO2science.org.

    From http://www.sourcewatch.org/

“CO2science.org is the website for a group known as the ‘Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change’.

The last word, as always Trevor… is yours, im afraid I cant keep on with this conversation. Thanks for the wee chat anyway mate :0)

  28. Trevor Collins, 13. November 2008, 9:46

greetings from Whangarei…ice increasing, you continue to ignore the real facts about this, Alfred Gore and his science, the IPPC and the science they have failed to come up with (how many scientists did you say were involved, and our own NIWA) the North West Passage? just being opened? since when? Gary, the list is endless….what about this family team at wwwCO2science…you have got it all wrong for the funding, they have never and I repeat never received any monies from anyone believe or not. Yes, I am reading some of the info you mentioned, can I put some more into the arena, greenspirit.comp, your old greenie mate Patrick Moore, skepticsglobalwarming, scienceandpublicpolicy.org, two closer to home Australianclimatemadness.blogspot, and the anti-greenblogspot…Gary I ask you in all seriousness, are these people all crackpots or do we need to show each side of the coin? thank you…enjoy your CO2 today ps did you read the comment about China is getting greener, yes greener, this is all on the web site of http://www.CO2science? pps how much longer do we have to the tipping point? this changes daily.

  29. Greg, 13. November 2008, 22:54

Oh my Trev, are you still relying on all those disreputable sceptic websites?

They all keep repeating the same worn out arguments thinking that the more emphatically they are stated, the more truthful they despite the mountain of evidence now dispelling them.

And australianclimatemadness.blogspot and anti-greenblogspot… you do realise that these blogs and the opinions shared on them cannot be misconstrude as fact? (As an aside, in its about section austalianclimatemadness says it “takes a humorous and satirical look at the climate change religion” which pops up two red credibility flags right away.)

I could start a blog right now called climatescepticsaredestroyingmankindsfuture.blogspot and base all my articles on the argument that by not promoting fear, uncertainty and doubt climate sceptics are doing more harm to the environment and the world economy in the long term, thus dooming future generatons to more adversity and a lower standard of living investing. There’s plenty of information to support such a thesis, and I probably woulnd’t have to cherry pick it as much as the more militant sceptics do climate science. This wouldn’t make me right though.

The quality of your sources dictates the quality of your information.

Instead of the undermining-its-own-name C02science, why aren’t you following the calm, rational and unbiased discussion on Realclimate.org?

Other than that, Gary gave you plenty of links. Links that are far more reputable than the ones you seem to put stock in.

Personally, I can’t believe your still stuck on the same tired arguments from eight months ago. Like the ridiculous “Obama is a Muslim/Socialist” cry of the vanquished GOP, your statements are becoming a mantra that runs against all evidence and logic.

Also Trev, just looking at your first comments on this post…

“Mr president elect, wants to close all coal mines in the US putting about million people on the scrap heap, this for starters..” and “he has to bail out the US motor car industry or else he will have another mutiny on his hands”

From the industrial revolution companies and entire industries have come and gone, and as they have jobs have migrated from one area to another. Saying a million people will be out of work while not recognising that the new industry that springs up to take the coal industry’s place is likely to create just as many jobs is completely asinine.

Shoring up an industry whose time has come is not a solution. Coal has all sorts of problems, from health to environmental, and far better solutions have been around for a long, long time. Somewhat similarly, auto makers who made foolish decision to focus on SUV’s are also finding themselves left behind. Again, superior technology already exists, but those now in strife didn’t want to embrace fuel efficiency, hybrids or EV’s and get ahead of the market, and are now paying the price.

Should all those who worked in manual telephone switching have been kept on the job instead of the industry embracing new, more advanced communications technology because “they would have been out of work” otherwise?

Industries and technology evolve and people lose their jobs. It sucks if it happens to you, but it’s a fact of life. The world changes, and you have to man up and change with it.

The government’s role in these cases should be supporting those that lose their jobs by providing financial assistance if required while they are out of work, and help with jobseeking, re-education and re-skilling. Not propping up outdated industry for the sake of it.

Obama certainly isn’t the messiah, but he does offer actual hope for the future in a number of areas, not to mention makes a refreshing change to the dangerous administration that has besieged the US constitution and much, much worse. If anyone can argue with a straight face that another republican term (particulalry with Palin as 2nd in command) would be better for the US/World, well, that would be interesting to say the least.

Obama has also already curtailed the influence of lobbyists and other big money meddlers:
