Reminds me of a scene in the shipping news

Billy: It's finding the center of your story, the beating heart of it, that's what makes a reporter. You have to start by making up some headlines. You know: short, punchy, dramatic headlines. Now, have a look, what do you see?
[Points at dark clouds at the horizon]
Billy: Tell me the headline.
Quoyle: Horizon Fills With Dark Clouds?
Billy: Imminent Storm Threatens Village.
Quoyle: But what if no storm comes?
Billy: Village Spared From Deadly Storm.

Here's another example ...

Power supply to South Island under threat: Marlborough pylon undermined by wet weather

General manager grid performance Bob Simpson said the problem was discovered last night but Transpower was not expecting any interruption to southern power supply.

True, I received a response from the author saying someone else picked the headline - that must be incredibly frustrating, to write a solid article and have someone else butcher it with such an appalling headline.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to contact the editor responsible. Wouldn't it be interesting to publish the editor's name for each article? - Written by ... edited by ...

I doubt whether the author is responsible for the headline. It's the sub editors who write headlines and shape the content to match the publication style - It's the editor's responsibility. Boycott the NZ Herald's vote for apathy in the name of climate change.

Absolutely disgusting choice of a headline - if you feel the same you might want to go to http://www.nzherald.co.nz/author/story.cfm?a_id=61&objectid=10528179 and let the author know (there is an email link at the bottom of the page).
