Day 2: Tauranga Palm Kernel ship action update

Climate crime

Climate crime

Late last night the last of the 14 activists aboard the East Ambition preventing the palm kernel  (PKE) from being unleaded in Tauranaga was cut off and taken away by police. They are all very tired but safe and satisfied that they managed to stop the unloading for as long as they did, and also to bring the issue to international attention. The story has run in all over the world from Toronto, to London through to Jakarta.

The action has certainly  highlighted Fonterra’s climate crime and we are continuing our call to John Key to force the multinational dairy giant to stop future imports. You can send John Key your own message here. As jo, one of the activists aboard the ship said:

This ship’s cargo has contributed up to 364,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. That’s the same as the emissions from 127,000 cars over a year. John Key hasn’t taken steps to stop this climate crime which is why we stopped the shipment today.

So the activists have been removed from the ship but we’re not finished yet! Today there will be a public protest in Tauranga against further palm kernel shipments into NZ. We’ve sent an invite to all Greenpeace supporters in the area … Read more »

Tauranga Palm Kernel ship action update

Activists lock on to crane wires

Activists lock on to crane wires

Our activists have been aboard the East Ambition off the coast of Tauranga for over 6 hours now and have thus far managed to keep it from unloading it’s cargo of palm kernel animal feed.

Two activists have been arrested by 12 remain locked to the ship’s cranes. They continue to post live updates direct to our website from their positions.

Fonterra have come out and denied responsibility for the shipment but this is disingenuous to say the least.  The shipment is headed for Fonterra’s nationwide dairy herd  -there’s no two ways about it. Read more »

Palm kernal action update

All 14 activitsts remain locked on to the ship just outside the Port of Tauranga.

One is on the anchor chain. NM03

Check out new images just up on the live feed site.

The rollout of the action “went like clockwork”, according to our campaigner on the ground, and the ship’s crew were, well, really rather good about it all.

Police officers have arrived at the Port.

Meanwhile media pick up commences.

Greenpeace stops palm kernel shipment coming into Tauranga

shipGreenpeace activists have blocked a shipment of palm kernel animal feed from Indonesia, entering Tauranga Port and destined for Fonterra dairy farms.

The 12 activists who have boarded the East Ambition, several kilometers from Tauranga port, have locked themselves to the vessel, the anchor chain and its four cargo cranes to prevent the ship unloading. News footage shows they’re all holding banners which read “Fonterra Climate Crime”.

Activist Jo McVeagh (who’s locked to one of the cranes):“Fonterra’s involvement in rainforest destruction and the massive climate impact this causes is criminal. This ship’s cargo has contributed to the release of up to 364,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. That’s the same as the emissions from 127,000 cars over a year. Fonterra and John Key have taken no steps to stop this climate crime which is why we’re taking action today.”

Stay tuned…..

Milkshakes at Bellamy’s?

geoffI’m starting to wonder if there’s something a bit strange about the food they feed people at Parliament these days. The MPs are all acting up and acting strange. In fact, the last seven days have been downright bizarre when it comes to environmental politics. Read more »

Delegates at this weekend’s Labour Party conference will need to do some hard thinking about the party’s direction on environmental issues.

Late on Wednesday night Labour surprised a number of people by voting to support the Government’s changes to the Resource Management Act (RMA). These changes to New Zealand’s primary piece of environmental law will make it a lot harder for environmental advocates to defend the environment and the health of communities.

Despite speaking out against the Government’s moves to scrap tree protection rules and gut public participation rights in the debate, Labour MPs ended up voting for the very things they opposed. Remember that at the end of the day, votes not words count in Parliament. Read more »

FAD Watch (and its not about trendy fashion)

They have only been out on the high seas for a couple of days and already they are taking action to defend the great fish of the Pacific. Here’s the latest from Mary Ann, on the Esperanza.

We arrived a few days ago in the High Seas of the Pacific. Since yesterday, we have been on constant watch, scanning the horizon by day, the radar by night, diligently on the look-out for FADs and fishing boats.

Up in the bridge, Gabriel was the first to go on FAD watch at 8 in the morning.
And lo and behold …you guessed it…he spotted the very thing we were looking for, a FAD! Read more »
